News and AnnouncementsFor Immediate Release Tuesday, September 28, 2004 215-292-1522 Joe Exley to Head Brass Caption for 2005 BushwackersThe Bushwackers are pleased to announce Joe Exley as the 2005 Brass Caption Head. After Joe's outstanding work with the line in 2004, Jay Morlot and Jim Dugan worked quickly to bring Joe back. Joe Exley lives as a professional tuba player in New York City, constantly performing with groups across the country, often appearing regularly with as many as 10 groups at any time. Credits include studio performances on CBS TV News themes, music videos, rock, jazz, and folk albums, tours with groups such as T.S. Monk’s big band, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, and many others. Recent engagements have included performances with Howard Johnson’s Gravity, as featured soloist with NYC’s Downtown Chamber Orchestra, and leading his own ensembles including his funk/jazz band “Tuba Love” and his world music group, the “Xuba Trio”. Since moving to New York just a few years ago, Joe has performed in over 50 different clubs and venues in NYC alone and has performed live on several different radio stations. Joe’s drum corps experience started as a contra player in the Phantom Regiment, but after one season, Joe was recruited by the Blue Devils to be part of “The Line” (BD’s legendary contra section). Joe marched two seasons with the Devils, becoming a member of BD’s Hall of Fame upon his ageout. Joe then took a few years off from drum corps to complete his graduate degree in music performance at Northwestern University, studying with Rex Martin, Arnold Jacobs, and Gene Pokorny. Joe reentered the activity working as a brass instructor and consultant for several DCI finalist corps as well as a designer and adjudicator for high school bands. In addition, Joe has maintained a large studio of private brass students, received grants for composing, and produced recordings for other artists. At the suggestion of Late Nite trumpeter Al Chez and DCI judge Jeff Mitchell, Joe entered into DCA in 2004 as a consultant to the Bushwackers and was appointed their brass caption head for the 2005 season. Please help us welcome Joe as the 2005 Bushwacker Brass Caption Head. With Joe working on Dennis Argul's charts, great things will be happening for the 2005 Bushwackers.
