Joe "TubaJoe" Exley is a performer, composer, bandleader, producer, and educator based in New York City. Joe is known as an intriguing innovator of the tuba, constantly bridging the gap between genres and bringing a fresh new role and voice to an instrument that for so long has been relegated to the back row. As a tuba artist, Joe’s improvisatory neo-funk band Tuba Love features drum-and-bass style drumming, world percussion, electric guitar, groove organ, DJ sounds and a plethora of various horns and strings, all led by Joe and his innovative electro-acoustic voice on the tuba. Joe also performs completely solo, presenting a haunting, almost minimalist sonic vision that redefines the traditional role of the tuba and is accessible to classical, jazz and pop audiences alike. Joe is a busy freelance performer in New York City, constantly performing hundreds of shows with countless ensembles in just about every type of music imaginable. Credits include live performances with T.S. Monk, Bernard Purdie, Orbert Davis, Josh Roseman, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble, members of the Chicago Symphony, Howard Johnson's Gravity, and many others. Studio performance credits include classical, rock, and jazz releases, performances on CBS television network news themes, children's videos, and a re-airing video feature on television's Bravo! Production credits have included the Bernard Purdie Quintet, Pojazz including the former US Poet Laureate Billy Collins, other jazz and rock albums as well as major corporate events on the East Coast and in the Midwest. Joes compositions have been performed by professional, college, and high school groups and have received awards from the Meet the Composer Foundation. Joe's newest work, his A Concerto-ish for Trumpet is premiering in December in New York City. A sought after educator and pedagogue, Joe has consulted for many DCI "Top Twelve" corps, championship school band programs, and has presented master classes at colleges and high schools. Joe's private students have sat principal in all-state bands and received major scholarships to top conservatories. Some of Joe's most recent education accomplishments have included the revamping of the brass program of DCA's Bushwackers, consequently earning the brass caption trophy, and working with the Trumbull High School band in Connecticut, helping to bring them their first open class championship ever and top honors in music. Joe first entered drum corps as a member of the Phantom Regiment, and later aged out as a "Hall of Fame" member of the Concord Blue Devils. Joe holds a Master of Music Performance degree from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Joe's tuba teachers have included Rex Martin, Arnold Jacobs, Gene Pokorny, Jack Robinson and Ken Singleton. Joe conducted additional brass pedagogy study with Vincent Chicowicz, Floyd Cooley and Buddy Baker, and has performed under legendary bandmasters Paynter, Corporon, Reynolds, and Fennell.
